Window 16

from 2001 | West side
“Venture forth, go away”

The sixteenth window in the cycle, completed in 2001, was donated by the Kalkar Brotherhood of St. James. The Kalkar Brotherhood of St. James has existed continuously since 1477, perhaps even longer, which is why it is considered the oldest St. James brotherhood in Germany.

In the evening light, this window, like the two previous rear windows of St. Nicolai, shines most impressively.

The small-scale carpet background consists of central rhombuses surrounded by triangles and polygons. On top of this, we see three paths leading upwards. They are composed of shells and shell segments with the ridges of scallop shells, evoking associations with the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela.

In the upper part of the window, the tracery, there is a large bright circle and angel wings, similar to the fourteenth window: the pilgrimage as the path of human life leads to the light.

But the window also reminds us that not everyone reaches the goal: the left path does not reach the top at all, and the right path only reaches the goal via a detour. Only the middle path leads directly to the glory of the Lord.
